The Power of Independence

Ergo Therapy Group is passionate about empowering individuals with disabilities and special needs, and we offer Supported Independent Living (SIL) assessments and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) assessments to help participants receive the necessary funds to get the most out of life. SIL for support services and SDA for special housing are initiatives created by the Australian government and funded by NDIS that are revolutionising care and assistance for people with disabilities – creating the opportunity for individuals to live and thrive, regardless of personal challenges.

SIL assessments and SDA assessments are required to gain access to NDIS funding, and we are fully qualified to provide these assessments and to create a requisite SDA or SIL assessment report. This is a first step toward a life of independence, and we are always pleased to help our participants take it.

Ergo Therapy Group are Melbourne occupational therapy specialists, and we aim to create a world where everyone has the chance to live with dignity and self-reliance. Contact us today to learn more about our services by calling 0424 835 206, emailing admin@ergotherapygroup.com.au or make an online referral for someone who could benefit from our assistance.

SIL Assessments

A Supported Independent Living (SIL) assessment is used to determine the amount of support required by a participant with a high level of need or with a disability, to help them to live independently in a supported accommodation or in their own home. The objective of SIL assessments is to learn about the individual’s strengths and challenges and use that information to establish how much funding will be necessary for support services. SIL is a model of care that emphasises autonomy and independence – it’s about the right kind of personalised support and is as unique as the individuals receiving it.

SDA Assessments

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is accommodation that is partially or fully funded by the NDIS and is intended to provide housing for individuals with high support needs. SDA housing has a focus on accessibility with features to aid participants to live independently or to allow for better delivery of support. The purpose of SDA funding is to provide a safe and comfortable living space with an emphasis on independence. SDA funds are for the home and are separate from Supported Independent Living (SIL) funds which are for living support.

Steps in SIL & SDA Assessments

  1. An initial consultation where the assessor meets with the participant and any care givers to learn about the needs and goals of the participant.

  2. An on-site assessment of the participant’s current home to observe daily routines and any challenges faced.

  3. A functional capacity assessment to determine how well a participant can perform everyday tasks.

  4. A needs analysis to identify specific needs and requirements for assistance with mobility and daily living.

  5. A comprehensive SDA or SIL assessment report highlighting the participant’s strengths and areas where assistance would be beneficial, as well as recommendations for funding to be provided for the SDA or SIL service.
